New materials are developed constantly. They are often key enabler to totally new products. It is very important to understand how different materials behave to avoid potentially fatal material mistakes in new products. However, it is not uncommon that people working in product development and manufacturing have very little background knowledge of the materials they are working with or understanding how different materials behave. Similarly, people working in quality or reliability may not understand the behavior of materials and how this affects manufacturing and reliability. In worst case this can lead to catastrophic failures.
As novel materials are developed opening new applications, it is vital to understand what kind of restrictions and possibilities these new materials bring and how to take this into account. Especially, the development of new polymer materials (or plastics) has been very fast and has opened lots of new possibilities.
